Michael Clarke Duncan, Star of The Green Mile, Dies at Age 54

Michael Clarke Duncan, the Oscar-nominated star of The Green Mile, died Monday in a Los Angeles hospital after two months of treatment for a heart attack. He was 54.

The imposing 6-ft., 5-in., 300-lb. actor with a warm smile and gentle demeanor “never fully recovered” from the July 13 heart attack, according to a statement issued on behalf of his fiancé, the Rev. Omarosa Manigault, the former star of The Apprentice.

“Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time,” says the statement. “Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.”

The Chicago-raised Duncan worked as a ditch digger for the gas company before coming to Los Angeles where he was a bodyguard for stars including Jamie Foxx and Will Smith.

Duncan’s breakout performance as imprisoned convicted murderer John Coffey in the 1999 Tom Hanks hit The Green Mile earned him a supporting-actor Academy Award nomination.

He also appeared in such films as Armageddon, Planet of the Apes and The Whole Nine Yards and provided his voice for Kung Fu Panda.

“I am terribly saddened at the loss of Big Mike,” Hanks said Monday. “He was the treasure we all discovered on the set of The Green Mile. He was magic. He was a big love of man and his passing leaves us stunned.”

Elisha Cuthbert is getting her happily ever after!

The Happy Endings actress, 29, is engaged to hockey player Dion Phaneuf, 27, Cuthbert announced via Twitter September 2. “Happily, happily, happily, happily engaged!” the blonde star wrote. “This has been the most amazing weekend ever.”

The couple, who began dating in May 2008, celebrated at New Glasgow Lobster in Prince Edward Island, Canada, later that night. “Last night we had the privilege of hosting a surprise engagement party for Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert,” the restaurant tweeted September 3. “Congrats to them both.”

Announcing their engagement at the venue was “a nice surprise for all their guests,” according to the restaurant’s Facebook page. “Congrats to them both and LOVE the ring!”

Phaneuf “made the reservation about a week ago but never said it was for an engagement party,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively. “They invited 40 friends and family to celebrate at the restaurant.”

The group feasted on lobster in the restaurant’s downstairs dining area. “Elisha looked very happy and pleased. She was showing off her ring to her family and the wait staff,” the source adds. “The female wait staff were gushing about the ring saying it was ‘quite impressive’ and ‘huge.’ At one point, Dion and Elisha both got up an gave a speech and thanked everyone for being there and celebrating this exciting time with them.”

Phaneuf, who is captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, made his NHL debut in 2005. Cuthbert’s other TV and film credits include 24, Old School, The Girl Next Door, Love Actually and House of Wax.

Cuthbert, a native of Alberta, Canada, evidently has a thing for hockey hunks: She dated NHL star Sean Avery, 32, from 2005 to 2007, and Toronto Maple Leafs alternate captain Mike Komisarek, 30, from 2007 to 2008.

Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic End Engagement

Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic attend the TAG Heuer Formula 1 launch on November 1, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Maria Sharapova never made it down the aisle.

During the tennis player’s post-match news conference at the U.S. Open August 31, the 25-year-old — who had just beat Mallory Burdette, 6-1, 6-1 — revealed she and professional basketball player Sasha Vujacic quietly ended their engagement several months ago.

“It’s been since the end of spring,” Sharapova told reporters (via E! News). “I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question.”

In October 2010, former Los Angeles Lakers forward Vujacic, 28, popped the question with an engagement ring valued at $250,000. Sharapova, 25, said little about their relationship in the years after Vujacic proposed.

“I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced we were engaged,” she explained August 31. “I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well.”

The decision to split from Vujacic was “challenging,” Sharapova added.

“It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling and especially his career move to Turkey. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other,” the Russian beauty said. “I still would love to call him as a friend. We spent really great years together.”

The actress announced her pregnancy just five months after delivering Hattie.

“I was shocked, obviously,” she told PEOPLE of getting pregnant so soon after her daughter’s arrival.

But Spelling, who chose a delivery surprise for the second time, was also pleased to expand her family even more. “We feel truly blessed that another little angel has found us,” she said.

Talk about hot and cold.

After a couple months of casual dating, John Mayer and Katy Perry have split, multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly.

“She’s really upset about it,” one insider tells Us.

Echoes another insider: “She is making it seem like it wasn’t serious with John, but she is hurt.”

Us Weekly first reported the budding romance, with Perry, 27, and Mayer, 34, making an “affectionate” appearance together at Soho House in West Hollywood June 19.

At a Beverly Hills pool party Aug. 4, recently divorced Perry and notorious Lothario Mayer “were all over each other, making out,” one observer said.

A pal said earlier this month that the “Teenage Dream” singer was ready to get serious with Mayer.  “She doesn’t want to get her heart broken again, but she feels a real connection and wants to see where things go” with Mayer, whose exes include Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.

Perry divorced Russell Brand earlier this year, and briefly dated Florence + the Machine rocker Robert Ackroyd in the spring.

Avril Lavigne Engaged to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger

Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger’s relationship has been so quiet that few even knew they were dating. Now, after a six-month courtship, the Canadian rockers are engaged to be married, Lavigne’s rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Lavigne, 27, and Kroeger, 37, first got together in February to co-write a song for Lavigne’s upcoming fifth studio album.

“A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together,” a Lavigne pal tells PEOPLE.

On Aug. 8, Kroeger popped the question, presenting Lavigne with a 14-carat diamond sparkler.

“He makes her so happy,” a family source tells PEOPLE. “Both of their families could not be more excited.”

It will be Kroeger’s first trip down the aisle, and the second marriage for Lavigne, who split from Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley in 2009. She had also dated Brody Jenner.
