Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic End Engagement

Maria Sharapova never made it down the aisle.

During the tennis player’s post-match news conference at the U.S. Open August 31, the 25-year-old — who had just beat Mallory Burdette, 6-1, 6-1 — revealed she and professional basketball player Sasha Vujacic quietly ended their engagement several months ago.

“It’s been since the end of spring,” Sharapova told reporters (via E! News). “I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question.”

In October 2010, former Los Angeles Lakers forward Vujacic, 28, popped the question with an engagement ring valued at $250,000. Sharapova, 25, said little about their relationship in the years after Vujacic proposed.

“I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced we were engaged,” she explained August 31. “I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well.”

The decision to split from Vujacic was “challenging,” Sharapova added.

“It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling and especially his career move to Turkey. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other,” the Russian beauty said. “I still would love to call him as a friend. We spent really great years together.”
